A popular rebuttal to such comments is something along the lines of "But those weren't really Christian practices - all of that happened because of people using God to falsely justify war!"
Well, let's take a moment and step back to examine that statement.
The people that were behind the attacks on 9/11 were extremists. They were mistaken, they were wrong, and they killed in the name of a religion which is supposed to be about peace.
You'll also get anti-Muslim sentiments along the lines of "Well all those people support the terrorists anyway. They think they were right."
I live, and have lived in since the attacks, in a fairly mixed area/s - and I've never met a Muslim who described the terrorists behind the bombings as anything other than 'crazy,' or 'not real Muslims.'
Anyone who declares 'holy war' (can there be such a thing?) is taking a religion and perverting it. They're twisting it, and in doing so, teaching others the wrong thing, and staining the name of a culture, a people, and their traditions.
While many beliefs have their flaws, any practice will always have those that twist its ideals for power or to justify their actions - despite how horrifying they may be.
And as for those that want to say that the Qur'an - or for that matter, the bible - teaches violence in the name of God: no matter how 'divinely inspired' such texts may be, I think it's important to take what was transcribed by man and then edited and interpreted by hundreds upon hundreds of generations needs to be taken with a grain of salt. what we're left with today are at best guides for living, but it's important that we all consider on our own what is best before acting.
As for those that say 9/11 wouldn't have happened at all if not for religion? Grow up - war happens with or without someone claiming God wanted it to. We're human, and such tragedy is in our nature.
The best we can do is learn from our mistakes, try to understand, and help each other heal.
